There’s an element for whom supporting the troops is only important if it doesn’t inconvenience you in any way.

I do understand the caution about people’s speech being controlled by threats of reaction by religious fanatics a world away. I wasn’t too keen when people went around saying that peacefully protesting the war in Iraq was giving fuel to jihadis.

But acting as though Petraeus is the bad guy here is not reasonable. He communicated his situation very clearly, and a lot of people have clearly decided that their person desire to act out is more important than hasbara for the country.
