I’ve been saying that Romney will be the GOP nominee for months now. He’s been groomed and polished and vetted for years for this role by the GOP establishment. He’s next in the line of succession and he knows it.

This whole round of primaries has really been nothing but a charade.

Definitely, the only thing that really slowed Romney down, besides an utter lack of charisma/authenticity/non-robotic human qualities, was religion. Now that the GOP is more Church than political party, his Mormonism didn’t help and he couldn’t match Santorum in over-the-top bible thumpery. But the establishment hates Santorum and everyone else. So it’s been ordained for months. Moreover, it’s how the GOP rolls: if you run for the nod and come in 2nd, it’s “your turn” next time around. See McCain, Dole, Bush Sr., Reagan.
