The US has never been institutionally Christian. True, some of the English colonies were, but the Revolution overthrew that.

Rushdoony was sensitive to this, which is pointed out in his writings and which some of the not-as-slow Dominionists also acknowledge, which is why they are so fond of the colonies over the Jeffersonian/Madison Constitution.
