I love me some Tolkein, but the Silmarillion is turgid, turgid stuff.

I’ve read the creation part of that book once. The rest is an interesting read in a world history, taken in parts. And it makes a later reading of _The Lord of the Rings_ deeper since you “get” a lot of the cultural references made by various characters in passing.
