Which I was. After my surprise out-of-network visit to a cardiologist by a referral via my regular physician, I make sure I don’t make the same mistake again. I didn’t blow up on my physician since it’s not her responsibility if the referral is “in-network” or “out-of-network” as it is mine to do so.

It sucks that I double check on everything to make sure I’m “in-network” only for a colossal bill to occur soon.

If they do bill you at the OON percentage, call them. There’s a pretty good chance of getting it reviewed and adjusted to the network rate.
