I’m just imaging the usual “My client is a good boy” speech that whichever poor sod that pulls the short straw is gonna have to give to Judge Merchan. You know the speech: “My client’s got strong ties to the city (which he avoids like the plague since leaving office), that he’s done so much for it (by fucking over every contractor and supplier within it), that he’s a successful businessman (which is why he was fined an historic amount for accounting fraud), and no criminal record (because he’s spent decades buying everybody off). So the court should take all that into account, as well as good behavior (hey, no laughing in the back) during the course of the trial in imposing the lightest sentence possible.”

It’s not going to be that. It’s going to be, “You have no authority to imprison the next President of the United States! Think of the consequences when he wins re-election! This is illegal election interference, and we’ll appeal this sentence all the way to our friends in SCOTUS unless you go easy on him!”
