In terms of powers to the states, I would be willing to let US sttes choose their form of Democratic government, if, for example, they wanted to go more towards a parliamentary system (which, considering the history of Illinois Governors, might be a good thing).

Another, would be while I would be fine with the US having English as the national language in legislation, the states would be able to adopt second or more languages because cultural connections and historical reasons. Heck, even allow the states to join the various international language organizations like La Francophonie (Louisiana, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine), or Organization of Ibero-American States (too many states have a history with Spain or Mexico to count, not to mention Puerto Rico).
