Humanity doesn’t follow the course of least resistance. It is entirely possible your cynical view of human nature is correct, and that humans will not be able to achieve the complex network of social agreements that’ll allow us to forestall climate change. But it’s got nothing to do with following the course of least resistance.

If humans followed the course of least resistance we’d have never developed civilizations.

That was then. This is now. We are on the whole just lazy monkeys living off the human inheritance of millennia.

As long as gasoline is cheaper than buying a whole new car that runs on a yet-to-be-produced energy source, for instance, people will keep buying it, whether the cost is $3 per gallon or $17.
