One of the counties around here is a real redneck haven. The jail paid me to install steel plates on the insides of the walls because they caught people using hammer drills on the outside of the jail to bore holes so they could pass tobacco into the jail. The same jail had inmates break a hole in the concrete ceiling so they could get out and hit the gas station down the street to buy cigarettes and come back.

Our county jail just lets the trusties out to do work around town. I’ve run crews of them for Habitat. They are allowed to take food and innocent items back. Wife says: “If it’s safe to let them out, what the hell are they in for?”
