It’s so great to see them making them through that, because so many don’t. I have three military veteran friends who underwent significant trauma. Two of them were badly wounded, the last one psychologically screwed up after he got left behind during an extraction and had to make his own way back across fifty miles of Afghan mountains.

All three of them had good, strong relationships that nonetheless broke under the strain. It made it that much more tragic that it wasn’t anybody’s fault, it’s really hard to live with a guy who’ll wake up screaming in the middle of the night, or who will rage out at any perception of being abandoned. Really, the guy who wasn’t physically injured came out the worst. Being left behind by the guys he trusted most really tore him up. He forgave them, but man.
