My sister and brother-in-law, fine upstanding middle-class retiree homeowners, went bankrupt over medical bills last year. She had a bout with cancer and he was in a minor car accident.

Why do things like that have to happen in a civilized country?

Did they have insurance, or was it a case of copays, out of pocket expenses being overwhelming?
