Yes, like Clinton, the reality has moderated the candidate.

The right wing (pundits, talk radio, bloggers) has been painting him as far-left for a long time, including during the campaign. Hanging out with radical black ministers and terrorists, #1 most liberal Senator, socialist… it all seemed like smears to me even then and was way out of whack with his actual statements and policies. I never got the feeling he was lying just to seem like a centrist. Fortunately, I was right!
