A lot of people ask why Indiana is being singled out for criticism and boycotts because of this legislation and not the many other states that have similar laws. I’ve thought about it, and it’s invidious and prejudicial and all that bad stuff, but I’ll bet in most people’s minds it’s the underlying reason.

It’s because nobody expects any different in the former Confederacy or Mormonia—but this is an incursion into the heartland of the Union. “This far and no farther”!

It’s because the older laws in most of the other states are different than this law. Those laws were similar to the federal law, which was originally created so that you couldn’t get in trouble with the law for performing things related to religious practices or to give religion some leverage when dealing with the government (such as when a local government declares a church to be a historical landmark to keep it from being modified). The Indiana law was specifically designed to allow discrimination.
