Troubled as they were in many respects, the 1960s were the heyday of the prosperous middle class, made possible largely by the tax structure of the time. … I think there is a connection between that and daring feats of innovation and progress. We saw this not just in technology but in music and the arts.

We also had a matter of national prestige, a rival ideology that we had to keep ahead of.
