re: #142 Cheechako

Let’s look ahead to the 2020 election. The Republicans are well aware of the demographic trends in the United States. Less older white voters and more minority voters. After their successes in 2010, the Republicans gained control of many State Legislatures and Governorships and used their control to Gerrymander many safe Republican House Districts. In the not too distant future, I expect the Republicans to attempt to change the States they control from a winner takes all of the Electoral Votes in a State to a system like Maines and Iowas where the Electoral Votes are split. In Maine and Iowa the winner in the Congressional District gets that electoral vote representing the House seat and the overall winner for the State gets the 2 electoral votes representing the two Senate seats. Safe House seats equals safe Electoral College votes.

I think this is the only way the Republicans can maintain their power beyond 2020. And remember, after 2020, there will be a new census and we’ll have to go through the whole mess again.

To my enormous disappointment, the country acquiesced in the 2000 election robbery. “500,000 votes? Eh, close enough!” What happens when a republican loses the popular vote by 10 or 15 points but wins the Electoral College through this kind of jiggery-pokery? Will people stand still for that?
