Federal immigration law, Roberts told us in his ruling upholding Trumpâs decision to shut out travelers from Muslim-majority countries, âexudes deference to the president.â But as a private citizen and businessperson who happens to be president, the equities are different. In both cases, which stem from attempts by the House of Representatives and Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance to seek financial records and other documents going back several years, Trump was the one who initiated the litigation, running to federal court to quash a series of congressional and prosecutorial requests that werenât directed to him personally, but to financial and accounting firms holding records belonging to his businesses, his adult children, and related entities.
