Heard him speak on NPR just now. He was not just doing the usual “yes, he was a great athlete…” but was emphatically saying he was an exemplary human being. I understand the anger some black voices are expressing about the trope “he transcended race” due to Ali making America confront race, using his celebrity. But Foreman didn’t want him limited to the box of African-American issues advocate only. Not mutually contradictory: that’s what Pres. Obama’s statement said with some nuance.

Right. I totally understand what George is saying. Anyhow, I saw a cool photo today of Ali with Willie Mays and Barry Bonds. Neat photo.
