Seems that the Lost Dutchman mine is was probably not even located in the Superstition mountains, the old Dutchman simply went back and forth through the Superstitions to throw off anyone trying to follow him.

Superstition Wilderness area used to be great place to go hiking and picnicking, just outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area, but now it is overrun with idiots out popping off firearms and no longer safe or pleasant.

Those lost-treasure stories are found in a lot of folk traditions. In the mountains of KY/WV, its Jonathan Swift’s silver mine. When I was doing archaeological surveys there, it generated enough suspicion about my comings and goings to crimp the information flow from the old folks.
