re: #148 Barefoot Grin

My dad had a .22 rifle that he used in marksmanship classes at his high school in the 1940s. He disabled it, but kept it in our basement for sentimental reasons. My Georgia grandfather had guns everywhere. I was told that once my older brother when he was about 4 was found on my grandparents’ bed playing with a pistol my granddad kept in his headboard (it had compartments). My mom yelled at him and he said he would be safer. I remember climbing into his Chevy pickup when I was 7 or 8 and finding a pistol in the glovebox. I never told my mom. It’s amazing none of us shot someone or ourselves (shotguns just leaning against the wall of the hallway closet).

Growing up we had a .22 that I used to learn to shoot with and a 12-gauge used to deal with the critters that wanted to eat our chickens. Dad had a revolver but sold it when the kids came along. He had no problem with my bolt actions, lever action, 20-gauge or even my CZ-75 clone but the AK concerned him. I had to explain that it was a civilian version and could not do full auto. I found that discussion interesting in a way…
