20+ years of being an out queer tells me no one’s stereotypes of us ever fit. And certainly not those of mainstreamers and onlookers. There are a lot of jerks, nice people, normal people, haters, lovers, all kinds, in any community. The gay one is no different in that regard.

I think this is why the broader queer community tends to be far more marginalized when compared to people simply being ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ or even bi. Even fewer stereotypes can be built up and applied there and I think that makes people extra uncomfortable. We seem to like placing people into nice, simple buckets.
