The problem has long been that without social conservative voters Republicans cannot form a majority coalition. Paulians can be run off, but others cannot be gotten rid of. In any scenario where that was tried, you’d end up with a hodge-podge of party fragments unable to win anything. I know some people here would like such an outcome, but I wouldn’t.
But a Mondale situation is not going to happen. The more relevant parallel is what happened to the Democrats in 1860.
Where a whole chunk of them, including practically all the fireeaters, *left the country* (so to speak) for four years soon afterwards?
