re: #150 Mattand

The neighborhood roughly below Fishtown, Northern Liberties, is supposedly a similarly re-gentrified neighborhood, but it seems like it still has some rough spots.

There’s two murders I’m aware of that happened there over the last few years: one was drug-related, and the more recent one involved a woman literally being gunned down in front of her mom during a mugging.

What’s weird is you don’t hear about that kind of shit going in Fishtown to the north, and Old City to the south.

An administrative assistant I used to work with was a long time Philly native. She said that Philly’s neighborhoods were a patchwork or “good” and “bad” spots. And there could be a small (couple of blocks) “bad” spot between two “good” spots that you could wander into without realizing it. And sort of vice-versa as an area started to gentrify.

It might also hinge on *when* you wander into those areas as well. Center City streets are busy during the day, but pedestrian traffic dries up after 7pm in a lot of areas. And I’ve heard that things can get a little dicey down around the Convention Center after 9pm.
