I think it’s because he sounds presidential. Lincoln also reportedly sounded a bit country. Wonder if there’s any recording of his son but Robert Lincoln was Ivy League educated so probably sounded much different than his dad.

Abe was all through Ky, Ind. and Ill., so his hick accent isn’t surprising.
