It has become clear to me that the foul idea that the less someone earns the less worthy they are as a human being is deeply entrenched in US society (this is why I absolutely despite the term “net worth” BTW).

IMO many customers at fast food places (and retail in general) see themselves as being intrinsically better than the employees there, and will seize on any excuse to act like an 18th century French aristocrat.
