I don’t know if you lived here in ‘79 when John Paul II celebrated Mass on the Parkway, but they did not even come close to this kind of “Shut it all down” idiocy. And Frank Fucking Rizzo was mayor; a guy who ruined Philly’s Bicentennial by warning people that throngs of hippies were going to overrun the city.

Jesus Christ, they are shutting down traffic as far north as Girard Avenue. The one bridge and every highway around downtown will be closed; no private traffic will be allowed on the streets; and mass transit will be severely limited.

You live there. This doesn’t bother you in the slightest?

I actually live in the exclusion zone (or in this case inclusion zone). I’m on the Delaware Riverfront on Columbus Blvd between Market and Race. With a million and a half people expected each day (Pope JP2 only filled JFK with about 100 grand), I’m not going anywhere anyway. I’ll just load up on ice cream and pretend we had a blizzard.

EDIT - my bad, I was thinking of the Rolling Stones filling JFK. JP2 was at the parkway with the millions.
