I continue to strongly recommend Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here”. It was published in 1935, drawing on the ascent of Hitler (before anyone knew what that would entail) as one of many contemporary inspirations.

Hitler, Windrip, and Trump bear some similarities. The most glaring similarity is that in each case, the target audience of their message consisted primarily of numerous angry dim-bulbs with an indelible sense of entitlement.
