Christ, Milton Berle used used to appear on US prime time TV in the 50’s in drag and it was just seen as harmless humor. It was not until LGBTQ rights became a political issue that anything to do with cross-dressing became such a pressing moral “family values” issue.

I remember my boss (from NY/NJ area) back in the early 1980s showing me an old b&w picture of three guys in drag. One of them was my boss, about 30 years younger and very well made up. I was astonished. People are so stupid.
