I’ve been reading about the rise of Hitler a lot lately and the interwar German right is a lot like ours. The scapegoating of Muslims they do is no different from the stab in the back myth.

Getting a bit more like that but still far more like the Spanish example I think. The Fundies are far more scared of the modern world than anything else and that really reflects the hate of the Reactionaries of Spain for their left of center (prior to the war forcing the Republicans into Soviet arms) government as we see here. The anti-science, anti-modern world, reactionary religion of the American far right reflects the people who cheered Franco and his attempts to, in the end unsuccessfully, turn back the clock. Yet here we are 80 years later and the Spanish are still trying to recover from the evil inflicted upon them.

The other examples are the regimes of South America where murderous thugs were propped up in power by outside forces, usually the US (Argentina, Chile, etc) though on rare occasion the Soviets (Cuba, latter day Valenzuela).
