Because it was atheistic. Putin is an upright Orthodox Christian leader under which the benevolent influence of the Russian Orthodox Church has expanded enormously. Yeah, Reagan would hate that.

And, among other reasons, because it occupied East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia the Baltic states, etc.

Deng’s China, too, was atheistic yet US-Chinese relations were businesslike.
