A friend of mine has been working in IT for …at least 10 years, and is just finishing up his bachelor’s because his current position is at a college (one of the for-profit ones, I think) and he could take classes for free.

Maybe consider what the education benefits of whatever the next job is?

If I moved up to LA, I’d be a few blocks away from a good community college and would actually have the money to afford taking some classes.
