March 3 is the anniversary of the official adoption of “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem: a resolution signed into law by President Hoover 3/3/1931.
Why it took so long, I dunno: complaints from singers about the awkward range??
Controversial opinion time: I’ve never liked the US national anthem. Not only because of the weird melody, but the militaristic subject matter and, even worse, subtext that could be seen as pro-slavery.
“America the Beautiful” as a national anthem would be so much better, I feel…
