Defeatism is very easy to slide into and very difficult to get out of for many people, because it’s extremely difficult to stay positive and engaged when it seems the world is turning to shit all around you.

That’s no excuse. If you can’t stay positive and engaged, stay negative and engaged. Or at least shut up, instead of shitting all over everyone else’s attempts to bring about the goal you also want.
