Yup, it gives the Russians the ability to land an armored brigade behind Ukrainian main battle lines between the Russian Border and Russian occupied Crimea.

There had been a debate whether Russia would do that or the riskier operation of landing west of Crimea and seizing the Ukrainian Black Sea Coastline, linking up with Russian occupied Moldova.
