Not that odd if you think about Bernie supporters and read liberal as “supportive of minorities”. That’s a very white crowd and, based on a lot of things being said, it has some issues dealing with people of color. Just because they’re (D) doesn’t mean they can’t be racist, especially subconsciously so.

Not saying that this is necessarily the case, but it is an explanation for something that doesn’t seem to make sense.
