NSFW, someone I follow on Twitter linked to this video earlier today, a classic scene from Clerks:

Boycott! Outrage!

I was listening to an interview with Kevin Smith recently and the topic of his career arc came up. He’s an astoundingly grounded person and acknowledged that he only had a handful of good movies in him. He used the quote “A beautiful woman dies two deaths” which I found a pretty enlightened perspective. He was a pioneer in indy film but doesn’t seem very interested in being a godfather or intellectual leader of the movement. Clerks could never be made today within the studio system, it’s just too controversial. But we are rapidly approaching a breaking point where movie and music studios vanish, TV networks are gone and with that comes ever increasing the ineffective advertiser boycotts by political/religious activists attempting to silence others through economic pressure.
I think we’re due for another renaissance in art, music and movies by artists free from the burden of corporate funding (and economic boycotts) that comes through self publishing. I think it’s just around the corner.
