If they were too low and stalled either both wings, or one wing in a sharp turn, the plane will go down fast. Not enough altitude to recover. It’s a common error for inexperienced pilots, so it’s unfortunate military pilots would have made a similar mistake.
Mechanical problems might be more likely if the crew were experienced.
