One of the reasons I favor people getting university educations and at least some period of time living in a large city (along with some time living in a rural location as well!) is the simple exposure to multiple cultures and the viewpoints. Cities are often fantastic melting pots and basically don’t act as echo chambers for cultural viewpoints unless one goes to pains to keep oneself isolated.

I can tell you my time working in an urban capital city has opened my eyes- and I wasn’t exactly a provincial raving racist to start with.
