That excerpt of your correspondent’s version of American history is perhaps one of the dumbest things I have read about the Civil War. I don’t blame you for not engaging her further, because there’s so much wrong there, it needs an American History Triage team to fix it.

What annoys me is the the “Southern Pride” thing essentially leaves out the fact that they mean “white” to also be in the middle. I doubt the black residents in the South take much pride in those symbols, and in fact view them in a completely different manner. Including post-war associations with the men who wear the white sheets.
