Excellent analogy! Yes it is a very similar situation. My friend the pizzeria owner said his community comes from a place that doesn’t understand the idea of tolerating dissent and it scares them. Eventually when his community thought about and grasped it they understood and they came back to his pizzeria.

Actually even the idea of a Muslim pizzeria is so…American isn’t it?

I’ve never been to NYC, but my ex assures me that it used to be littered with Pizzerias with names like “O’Reilly’s Pizzeria” and “Hallinna’s Pizza and Subway Stop,” etc.

So yes, a Muslim run pizzeria is very much American. Sometimes when I’m in the Mission district in San Francisco, and I want a tasty, vegetarian dinner, I purposely seek out a halal restaurant. I like choices. Another culture adds more of that to the table. Pun intended. I’m hungry!
