It refers to both anti-fascist groups (most of which are non-violent), and the broader opposition to fascism in general.

The term has been conflated with the German group that formed with violence against fascism supporters as one of its aims.

I’m not sure the original definition of the term is worth trying to salvage; I stick to “anti-fascist” rather than “antifa” to avoid the confusion.

Antifa refers to vigilante street movements.
