Indeed. Letting evil people lie and scapegoat at will would appear to be a contributor to that problem.

The point remains that you have to be very damned careful when giving the State the power to criminalize, fine, and imprison people on the basis of specific political beliefs, no matter how reprehensible those beliefs.

That is not a consideration to be bandied about lightly.
