My best friend comes from a miltiary family also, dad retired as a colonel. My buddy enlisted as an E1 and qualified on his own for just about every specialized combat training you can imagine. He just spent the last few years being an infantry drill sergeant at Benning. Last month his oldest boy followed in his footsteps over his dads suggestion that he join something safer, more educational, and all around cleaner. He’s obviously very proud his boy ignored him. I’m betting your dad was too.
