Race, as a concept, operates on so many levels it’s almost impossible to say.

But when I say quadriracial, I’ve had kids in class who identify as black, white, NA Indian and Latino. You could say that Latino is just mixed Indian and European for the most part, but the kids count it separately because culturally it’s distinct from the other parts of their ancestry.

I’ve mentioned this before—we did a thing at the high school I taught at, for Black History Month, where the black kids put up their photos and described their heritage. The ways they chose to define themselves were various, and very interesting.

Asking my Mexican friends what it means to be Mexican has returned answers like, only the Aztecs, any indigenous peoples, or any indigenous peoples mixed with Euros. And by indigenous peoples, only those within the Mexican borders.
