Don’t quite know what the SHTF trigger would be, but I don’t think we’re wired now to take the kind of misery like that of the Great Depression. Not enough of us are on farms, for instance, and that’s not even addressing the mental resilience of the MTV generation.

What, you’re suggesting that we won’t do well at starving to death and drifting the roads looking for work?

One of them was a Depression-era photo, a couple and their kids sitting out front of their house, with that Depression expression—and the woman is wearing the ruby slippers.

I actually teared up a little, which may not have been the idea they were going for.

I had to stop watching “Carnivale”, partly because the mystery kept getting deeper, and the characters were palling, but also because the Depression backdrop was just depressing the hell out of me.
