There is no scientific disagreement; gorillas evolutionarily diverged before chimpanzees did, and this progression is empiricaly demonstrable via artifactual retroviral DNA sequences. And when you asked the question, you referred to chimpanzees AND apes, as if they were two different things; D’OH!

THe artifactual DNA gives different phylogeny based on the comparison. There is disagreement on the descent, and the phylogeny is inconsistent.
