Newt’s making the point that he can’t do that. That chameleon routine often works with sales and convincing people to invest money (I’ve pretended to be someone I’m not personality-wise when selling a good number of times), but it does not work in a political campaign.

Indeed, Willard has coasted this far by being as vague as possible. Part of what’s kept him afloat is never nailing his positions down, never doing more than making vague promises that any candidate can do. If he starts offering real ideas/policies, his goose is cooked.
