Besides companies calling their in-reality-employees “independent contractors”, companies often make employees part-time just to avoid implications of full-time employment. And then there is the problem of maternity/paternity leave. And sick leave in general.

The foundational problem is that the rich owners of companies want the benefits of people working for them but don’t want the responsibilities.
