I said it on another thread, we should have never attempted to setup an independent Afghan government so soon. Not until the warlords had waned in power.

We did it for the same reason that we did the same in Iraq, namely to give our occupation some air of “legitimacy,” that we were there to enforce “regime change” instead of add to our empire. We threw out the MacArthur handbook, telling ourselves that these were people yearning for freedom and democracy and we’d give it to them in record time.
