re: #146 Lidane

If I ever get back to being able to afford a new car, I’d probably go with the Focus hatchback. I drove one once and fell in love with it.

Ever since I bought my first VW Rabbit in ‘83…I’ve had nothing but hatchbacks. It is amazing how much stuff you can put in one when you fold the back seat bottom up and the seat back goes down to make a nice large flat floor.

I put 8’ 2x4s in mine all the time. I take one of the rear floor mats and put in up on the dash…slide the 2x4 in so that one end rests on the floor-mat protected dash, the other end just inside the rear opening…and you can close the hatch.

I carry many old towels, t-shirts and other rags along with rope and bungee chords and I can protect interior objects, paint on the bumper cover, etc…and the car becomes a little van!

The key is to make sure everything is lashed down so there is no movement when driving. That and remember to drive home real slow and deliberate…nothing worse than driving like an ass and having to stop quick and getting a 2x4 whacking you in the side of the head or shooting into the front windshield. And it helps that the store is only a couple miles on surface streets.
