That’s one thing I can admire in “the churches”, at least a lot of Black churches, are the ex-offender and stay-off-drugs programs. I’ve seen that kind of work up close and there is nothing glamorous or money-making in it.

Despite the megachurch stereotype, there’s very little money church work, in general. My father barely got paid anything, but it was a second job, basically on-call at any moment.

I’m an avowed atheist that believes agnostics are big, umm, “wussies” for refusing to take a stand but even I can see that if not for the Church Of God ministries in this county there would be an awful lot of hungry people running around.

The guy who performed my wedding is an old friend of mine who happens to be a black minister (his brother who sings backup for the Gaithers sang our wedding song). I asked about dating his incredibly gorgeous daughter (before I met my wife!) but he threatened to kill me if I tried. I’m pretty sure he was only joking.
